For a short period of time Gustaaf Wappers (1803-was a student of Matthias Van Bree (1773-at the Antwerp Art Academy. In Wappers traveled to Paris where he discovered the works and style of Eugène Delacroix Soon after his return to Antwerp he broke with the Neo-classical traditions of Van Bree and developed himself as one of the most famous Belgian history painters. The portrait drawing must have been made shortly before Wappers departure to Paris. With its subtle and intriguing features it is a testamony to a fragile friendship between master and student. The verso of the sheet also features a study of a standing female nude.
