Composite map-book, containing 10 engraved maps in 31 sheets or half-sheets, some folding, principally detailed topographical maps of German towns or regions, by Wiebeking and others, c. 1796-1800. Folio, 461 x 330 mm. (18 3/8 x 13 in.), early 19th-century half calf, covers detached, remains of lettering-piece on spine with title in English, occasional foxing, a few marginal tears . CONTENTS: 1) WIEBEKING. Karte der Rhein Gegenden von Kaÿserswerth bis Arnheim aus den besten Karten zusammengetragen. [N.p.,n.d., c. 1796]. 3 half-sheets, intended to be joined side by side, first sheet soiled and with one-inch tear entering image, mostly marginal foxing . 2) [WIEBEKING]. Topographische Karte der Rhein-gegend von der Aar-Mündung bis Blittersdorff; als eine Fortsetzung von der Bergischen Karte. [N.p.], 1795. Small oblong map, platemark approx. 197 x 379 mm. (upper platemark cropped), light marginal foxing . A "continuation" of no. 9 below. 3) WIEBEKING. Hydrographisch und militarische Karte von dem Nieder Rhein von Lintz bis unter Arnheim in X Blatt. [Darmstadt] 1796. 10 numbered sheets, each with platemark approx. 335 x 665, soft crease to sheet 9 , else good condition. Engraved by Eckard. 4) WIEBEKING. Karte von den Provinzen Holland und Utrecht in VIII Blatt. Darmstadt 1796. 8 full sheets, some light foxing, short marginal fold break to first sheet, sheet 3 creased and with small repaired tear just entering border, some fraying or chipping to edges, faint small marginal dampstain to sheet 8, some light soiling , engraved by Eckard, sheets 6 and 7 with a few roads lightly colored in pale pink wash. ) Fortsetzung von der Karte der Belagerung Kehls. Paris: chez Dezanche, 1770. Full-sheet, light marginal foxing, slight fraying to bottom edge . Fully hand-colored. 8) HAAS, GEORG. Carte des Partages de la Pologne en 1772, 1793, et 1795. Composée avec des Caractères mobiles par G. Haas. Basel: G. Haas and J. Decker, [c. 1795 or 1796]. Half-sheet oblong, map size 245 x 291 mm. , hand-colored. 9) WIEBEKING. Topographische Carte von dem Herzogthum Berg. [N.p.], 1789-92. Large wall-map in 4 folding sheets, platemarks approx. 600 x 915 mm., one or two small chips, second sheet soiled at top and tearing slightly along 1 platemark, faint dampstains to sheet 3, some light foxing to upper margins , engraved by Eckard, touches of hand-coloring. 10) FISCHER, JOHANN CHRISTOPH. Karte vom Herzogsthum Holstein, den Gebiethen... Hamburg und Lübek und des Bisthums Eutin. Nach der Fischerischen Karte entworfen von B--. [N.p., n.d.]. Full-sheet folding map, platemark approx. 490 x 612 mm. , partially colored. An interesting composite atlas of German maps, bound together at the end of the eighteenth century, possibly by a resident of Darmstadt, from where most of the maps originate. Karl Friedrich von Wiebeking (1762-1842), tax inspector for Darmstadt and chief hydraulic engineer for the Upper Rhine, was the author of numerous treatises on engineering and architecture, including a five-volume work on historical monuments dating from antiquity to modern times, as well as a gifted surveyor and cartographer. His extremely detailed maps, which evoke aerial views of the areas depicted, are models of exactitude, unrivalled at the time (in the title cartouche to the Holland-Utrecht map he proudly offers 500 Ducats to anyone who can show him a more accurate map of these two provinces).
