Zhivopisets . [Painter. A weekly satirical publication]. Third edition. St. Petersburg: N[ikolai] N[ovikov], 1775. 2 vols. in 1, 8° (155 x 95mm). With 2 leaves of ads at end of vol. 1. (Lacking G7, occasional soiling). Near contemporary half calf (worn, covers detached, spine chipped). Provenance : contemporary shelf-mark ('N.40') -- old ownership signatures on titles -- Paul M. Fekula. Famous satirical journal published by the master printer and free-mason N.I. Novikov, which includes the article 'Otryvka' -- the strongest protest against serfdom before the publication of Radishchev's 'Travels from Petersburg to Moscow'. The authorship of this article is disputed and attributed to Novikov, or to Radishchev. This third edition is revised from the editions of 1772 and 1773; two more appeared in 1781 and 1793 -- the last one after Novikov's arrest and the censorship of some passages.
