Universal motorcycles, sometimes known as Helvetia, have the rare distinction of Swiss manufacture, by a firm who were primarily active in the domestic market from 1928 to 1964. Initially using proprietary 4-stroke engines from Anzani, JAP and Python, their own large capacity side-valve V-twins were launched in the mid 1930s. A 250cc 4-stroke single was added, post war, together with the top-of-the-range 580cc flat twin. The handsome shaft-drive Swiss twin is in a complete condition, having been purchased by the Museum in 1994. Aside from its engine the plunger-sprung Universal bears a certain resemblance to Sunbeam's S8. Displaying an indicated 62,538km on the speedometer, the machine is stated to be "largely original", and is offered with Tariff Badge and Zollausweiskarte.
