Lot of 10 plus 8 certificates. Including: Joseph Sweetman Ames (1864-1943; physicist and professor, provost and president of Johns Hopkins University). Founding member of predecessor committee to NASA and NASA's Ames Research Center is named for him. ANS, n.d., only address for the place. Robert Gordon Sproul (1891-1975; 11th President University of California). Sproul was responsible for expanding the California University system, while maintaining a single governing entity. Signed slip of paper, dated October 1940. Walter F. Thornton (15th President Univ. of Santa Clara), ANS, Santa Clara, Dec. 2, 1914. Charles Upham Shepard (1804-1886; mineralogist). ANS, Amherst College, 25 Oct. 1861. Was chair of chemistry at the Medical College of South Carolina, Charleston, but left at the beginning of the Civil War. After the war ended, his former colleagues urged him to return, which he did for a few years. Franz Bopp (1791-1867; German linguist). Famous for comparative linguistics, especially on Indo-European languages. Signed piece of paper 3@5 x 5.5 in., "Professor Franz Bopp. ; Berlin 12 Marz (March) 1864." Benjamin Ide Wheeler (1854-1927; Greek and comparative philology [Cornell Univ.]; President University of California). ALS, 2pp, on Office of the President, U of C, Jan 29, 1864. To James D. Phelan (1861-1930), Mayor of San Francisco and Senator from California. H. Morse Stephens (1857-1919; professor of history at UC Berkeley). Stephens helped to purchase the Bancroft Library and build collections on the history of California, the earthquake and fire of 1906 and WWI. Unfortunately, with his death, the earthquake collection was not entered into the library collections, and his work on the "Great War" was cut short, since his death occurred while the war was still going on. ANS, on UC Faculty Club letterhead, 9 Sept 1909. Also to James Phelan. Charles William Eliot (1834-1926; President Harvard). Eliot was instrumental in transforming the provincial college into the institution it is today. He served the longest term as President in the school's history. TNS, Cambridge, 23 April 1900. William Rainey Harper (1856-1906; President of University of Chicago and Bradley University). Harper helped found and became the first President of both universities. He was also responsible for the early development of these institutions. He established departments such as Egyptology and sociology and the Univ. of Chicago Press. He also helped establish community colleges where students could take their first couple years of courses close to home. He set up extension programs, offering evening classes to those who work during the day. And this was just the beginning of his educational innovations. TLS, 1p on American Institute of Sacred Literature letterhead, New Haven, CT, 21 Feb. 1890. John P. McGuire III (1836-1906; son of founder of McGuire's University School). This college-prep school was established to prepare young southern boys for life, and advanced placement in the University of Virginia. ALS, Richmond, VA, 31 Feb. 1917. Also in the lot are Teacher's certificates for Finis Lyon (1912) and Winch? Lyon (1916), both from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Certificates from Butler Co., OH for A.L. Morris, 1874, 1876, 1877, 1883, 1891 and 1895.
