The Benvenuti Case – Boscovich, R. J. - (Benvenuti, C. ). Kupfer taf. 1 Bl. , LXXXI S., 1 Bl. Errata. Alter Umschl. ( ) Poggendorff I, 144; Riccardi I/1, 116, 2; I. Martinovi, The Early Reception of Bokovi's Natural Philosophy (in: Synthesis Philosophica 8 (1993), S. 3 07-333), passim. "The Jesuit superiors tolerated Boscovich's Newtonianizing, with its proscribed Copernican suppositions, as mathematics, as everybody knew, had nothing to do with the truth; but they demurred when Benvenuti started to teach it as physics within the philosophy curriculum. They decided to get rid of him, not in the rough old way, but by sending him to teach in one of their smallest and most remote colleges" (J. L. Heilbron, Benedict XIV and the Natural Sciences, S. 1 88 f.). First edition of this rare and important work, being the first exposition of Bokovi's theory of forces, presented by his pupil Carlo Benvenuti. With 1 engr. folding plate. "In Benvenuti's Synopsis a certain passage was guaranteed by Bokovi's pen, the one in which he first formulates and solves the problem of the equilibrium of four points... The attacks of the religious superiors on Benvenuti's Synopsis, causing the removal of Benvenuti from the chair of metaphysics at the Roman College, was in reality a veiled attack on Bokovi's natural philosophy" (Martinovi). - A crisp copy in green wrappers.
