Constantin, Freiherr Von Ettinghausen (1826-1897) and Alois Pokorny (1826-1886) Physiotypia Plantarum Austriacarum. Die Gefsspflanzen sterreichs in Naturselbstdruck, mit besonderer Bercksichtigung der Nervation in den Flchenorganen der Pflanzen. Vienna and Prague: [1855-]1856. 5 volumes only (without the 4 text volume), 2 (563 x 404mm). 500 nature-printed plates. Later marbled sheep, spines gilt with red and green morocco lettering pieces (spines and extremities slightly rubbed or bumped). VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE MOST IMPORTANT WORK PRODUCED BY NATURE PRINTING EVER PUBLISHED. The 500 plates (100 in each volume) were printed under the supervision of Alois Auer at the Vienna state press, many include more than one plant giving a total of 1588 examples on the 500 sheets. A further 30 plates were included with the quarto text volume not present here. Von Ettinghausen, an Austrian botanist, palaeontologist and mineralogist, was a keen supporter of the nature-printing process and published at least five other works using the process. Pokorny collaborated with him on a number of projects, and worked with him to improve the quality of nature printing and whilst also teaching and lecturing at various establishments in Vienna, lecturing on phytogeography at the university from 1857-1868.
