Beschreibung:

GRADUAL, in Latin, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Germany, probably Trier, 1725] 4°, 200 x 155mm. i+340+i leaves, with contemporary foliation from the second leaf running 1-318, but with an unfoliated early inserted leaf between 84 and 85, ff.1-317v with eight lines of text and music with hufnagelshrift neumes on a five-line stave, ff.328-337 with 23 lines of text, all written and ruled in dark brown ink, justification: 164 x 120mm, line-fillers, rubrics and patterned skeletal initials in orange-red (some darkening of paper in written area and ink erosion affecting part of two lines of text and music on first two leaves). German 16th- or 17th-century blind-panelled pigskin over wooden boards (remboîtage, repairs to joints and foot of spine, lacking clasps). PROVENANCE: 1. The opening initial includes the monogram MH and the date 1725. 2. The presence of many feasts of especial significance in the diocese of Cologne -- Ursula, Severin, Pantaleon, Agilolphus and the Translation of the Three Magi -- would seem to indicate the origin and intended use of the manuscript in that region. On folio 240v, however, the rubric specifies 'S. Maximino patronno nostro', with the inclusion of instructions for the celebration of the saint's translation in September: this points to an origin in the famous Benedictine monastery of St. Maximinus outside Trier. This was founded at the church of St. John where the saint's body was buried in 353. 3. Purchased from Rebecca Holmes, 1 November 1941 -- donated to SMS January 1942. CONTENT: Gradual with the sung elements for the Mass arranged according to the Temporal and Sanctoral ff.1-174v; Common of the Saints ff.175-209v; Sequentiary ff.211-317; Index of Feasts arranged by month (December to November) with folio references to the relevant Introit, Gradual, Sequence etc ff.328-237. Folios 210, 318-327 and 339 are ruled otherwise blank. A few near contemporary alterations or additions were made on tipped-in or pasted strips.
