LEE, ROBERT E., General. C.S.A. Printed document accomplished and signed ("R E Lee B[reve]t Col. Lt. Col. 2 C[av]"), n.p., 18 October 1858. 1 page, oblong folio, shaved at left and right margins, with loss of some printed or manuscript text in several places. COLONEL LEE'S EXPENSES FOR HIS HORSE AND "PRIVATE SERVANTS" Despite its defective margins, a document of considerable interest recording Lee's authorized expenses for his two personal servants, both blacks, and his horse during the period January-September 1858, while he commanded the Second Cavalry. Printed in tabular form, the document is headed in manuscript "The United States...To Col. R.E. Lee 2 Cav[alry]," and sets out Lee's expenses for two manservants and a horse, under the headings "pay," "clothing," "forage" and subsistence." At the bottom, in the box headed "Description of Servants," the two servants' names, filled in by Lee, are partially cropped, but in the column "Complexion," Lee writes "Brn" (Brown). The Paymaster, Col. Andrews, has recorded payment to Lee of the total, $2,314.80 and Lee has signed at the bottom right to certify that "the annexed is an accurate description of my servant," and "I actually owned, and kept in service, the horses, and employed the private servants for which I charge."
