Beschreibung:

Mark Twain (S.L. Clemens) The Writings... Hartford, Connecticut: the American Publishing Company, 1900--1903 8vo, 23 volumes, Japan Edition, number 43 of 1,000 copies, additional general title pages and frontispiece portraits on Japan paper at the beginning of each volume, original blue cloth, white labels printed in white and red on the spines, top edges gilt, the others uncut, labels worn and sometimes slightly torn, spines of volumes 6 and 13 defective with cloth torn, covers somewhat worn, spotting to endpapers An early deluxe collected works edition published in the author's lifetime. Volumes 1-21 were copyrighted in 1899, followed by volume 22 in 1900 and finally volume 23 was added in 1903 and offered to the buyers of the original sets. In 1907-8 two additional volumes were offered. Each volume is printed on paper watermarked MARK TWAIN, and the original price of the set of 22 volumes was $110. The difference between the Edition De Luxe and the Japan Edition is that the latter was bound in silk cloth. The title page monogram in each work was designed by Tiffany and Co featuring scenes from Mark Twain's life. This set belonged to Eleanor "Nellie" Joseph, an opera singer from San Francisco who led a colourful life. She worked extensively in Paris and other European cities and had close connections with the literary avant garde; Gertrude Stein mentions her as an earlier lover of Alice B. Tolkas. She was also almost certainly acquainted with Mark Twain's daughter, Clara Clemens. They were of the same age and both were moving in the same circle of opera singers and artists in the early twentieth century. PROVENANCE:Eleanor Joseph of San Francisco, armorial bookplate (all volumes) and ownership signature (several volumes).
