Woodcut device on title [its first and only use?], woodcut headpieces, initials and culs-de-lampe, AA1 in volume II blank save for signature. (Without final blank in vol.I, 3 fore-corners cut away in vol.III with no loss, light waterstaining at the end of vol.I & II.) 18th-century French red morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, spines gilt in compartments, dark brown lettering and numbering pieces, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges.

A MAGNIFICENT COPY OF HENRI ESTIENNE’S CHEF D’OEUVRE. ‘Henri Estienne’s monumental edition of Plato, the first complete edition, which for two centuries remained the indispensable instrument of Platonic studies; to this day its pagination is universally accepted as the standard system of reference to the text of Plato’ (Schreiber). It is also one of the two books which nearly bankrupted Estienne. He could only manage to print one book in 1579 and none in 1580. Adams P-1439; Schreiber 201 and 2 plates; Hoffmann III, pp.119-21.
