The text of the broadside continues: “The regiment is now the mounted provost guard of Washington. The Regiment is fully equipped, splendidly mounted, and doing special duty in and around Washington. Apply to Lieut. Ellsworth, Co. D, Canton, St. Lawrence County.” The first ten companies of the 11th New York Cavalry was recruited between December 1861 and May 1862.
