Beschreibung:

A Bedouin or rural Egyptian indigo cotton womanÆs shift with embroidery in gold plate. Motifs include stylised carnations, and with contrast printed cotton underarm gussets, and a single red bead at the neck, 126cm long. Bought in Paris in 1986, (Na 41). æI have noted that I orginally thought it was Syrian (cf.Emed-69) because of the carnation motifs, but I saw one the same at the exhibition æLÆOrient dÆun DiplomateÆ at the MusÒe de lÆHomme in Paris, Jan.1991. Also the gold plate is like Azute work. I later added another note: æStill think this is SyrianÆ; and a cotton Tunisian blouse from Djerba, with cross stitch embroidery on neck placket of vases of carnations and tree of life, as in DMC booklets. The brocaded pale blue gauze sleeves are always of entirely different fabric in such garments, loose and always fancy. The red linear pattern is probably amuletic. This is a typical blouse of Tunisian costume both for everyday and marriage. Bought in Midoun market, Djerba, 1989. (Na 34) See Embroidered Textiles, p. 147
